Not your typical cruise excursionCruise lines and Viator/Trip Advisor are the places most tourists will go to book an experience while in port but those are often crowded, robotic and often have an emphasis on local merchants. My snorkeling experience with Island Jamaica Excursions was very different and enjoyable.The snorkeling location is about a 15minute ride from the cruise port. You are told to find their dispatcher ( a little tricky given all the other disembarking passengers) who calls for your driver. You will turn off the main road headed on a very short drive to the White River. I met Garey who would take me out on the water. I had my own mask and snorkel and he provided fins. He took along a spare mask and snorkel just in case. I should mention that I was already wearing my swim trunks and shirt so I didn’t need to change, but I think there were facilities for changing.I have never snorkeled off a boat before and Garey was very patient and reassuring. Without my glasses I could only estimate that the water was around 20 feet deep. The reef seemed fairly tall but the sea bottom was clearly visible. Garey took care to monitor my position and made sure that I avoided deep water and stronger currents. After about 45 minutes I returned to the dock and my ride back to the port was waiting for me.I think that it’s important to note that this company uses what I would call fishing boats with an outboard motor. I’m not very limber so getting in and out of the water over the side of the boat was challenging for me but Garey took care of me. It’s also important to note that the minimum party size is 2 so if you go solo you’ll be charged for 2. The website calculates its pricing using this formula.I would recommend this excursion to anyone wanting an experience that is a little off the beaten path.
